For more information about adopting a pet, please contact the Humane Society
at 410-749-7603.
Please print out our new Pre-Adoption Checklist. Simply fill out the checklist. Follow the instructions and then bring both items in when you come to the shelter.
If you rent, please have a copy of your pet deposit and pet release ademption paperwork when you apply to adopt a pet. By doing this you will help speed up the adoption process. We still encourage you to phone or stop by the Shelter. We can't tell you if the pet is still available via e-mail. Note shelter hours and phone numbers above. If you have visited this page before, you may need to Refresh your browser to make sure you are looking at the most recent page.
Our adoption and visiting hours are Tuesday through Friday 12 p.m.- 6p.m.
Saturday 11a.m. through 4 p.m. We recommend that you spend time with the pet of your choice. Bring your children and other pets with you when you visit, this allows everyone to get acquainted.
December 23, 2005 the Adoption/Visiting Center of the Humane Society will be closed all day. Adoption pickups scheduled for Friday will still be honored.
Are you considering adopting a pet? Have you thought of adopting from the Humane Society? You can be a real life saver! We have many animals available looking for new homes. Our animals come to stay with us for different reasons;
given up by owners for various reasons, found as strays roaming the streets, or taken from situations of neglect and/or abuse. We have beautiful animals in need of homes/families to spend their lives with. The majority of our dogs are mixed breeds and our cats are mostly domestic short hair; but we also receive pure breeds of dogs and cats. Come and visit us, we may have just the new companion you are looking for. Your kindness will be repaid with years of companionship and unconditional love. Would one wish more than a friend for life?
If you would like to share your home with a new pet, the Humane Society has many to choose from. The application process is quite simple:
Select a Pet
Keep in mind that the pet you select is a member of your family. You will be responsible for the life of the pet. We encourage you to bring your family (pets too!) to the Shelter as many times as is necessary to be sure you select the pet that is right for you. You may spend time with animals at the shelter to get to know them; take them for a walk or just sit and visit.
We wanted to make adopting a pet easier and more convenient for you. When you find a pet you think would make a good addition to your home, click on the "Adopt Me" button and fill out the on-line application. Once you have answered all the questions on the form "Submit" your request and then verify your application has been received by the shelter.
Be specific on the application form, complete all questions, and please be honest. Our adoption procedure is set in place to help ensure that our animals are placed in the best possible homes for their entire lives. Be prepared to wait a a few days while we process your paperwork.
Pay an Adoption Fee
| Dog/Puppy |
$125.00 |
| Cat/Kitten |
$100.00 |
These fees are payable when you take possession of the pet and are applied toward spay/neuter surgery , rabies vaccination, and vaccinations the animal received while at the shelter. For an additional cost, we also offer microchip services (a permanent identification to ensure a pet's chances of returning home if lost). Our staff will explain the contract to you and the importance of following through on all items stated in our contract, answer any questions or concerns you may have about your new pet, the services offered and/or the organization itself. Upon possession of your new pet, you will receive an information packet to take home containing the following: a list of veterinarians accepting the money vouchers for spay/neuter and rabies vaccinations; literature on various services offered by local organizations for your pet; literature on micro-chipping; and helpful literature on caring for your new pet.
Enjoying Your Pet!
This is the most important of all the steps. Keep in mind your pet will come from a confined atmosphere and will need time to adjust. Introduce the pet to new family members and other household pets gradually, and supervise all activities closely. Keep in touch with us--we can help with suggestions on housebreaking, behavior, veterinarians--and we're interested in knowing how the pet is fitting into your household. We especially love to receive photos to post on our "Happy Tails" board to show everyone the happy animals who have found new loving homes.
